Growth in the Number of ISI/Scopus International Publications of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering

According to data from the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training), in the past 5 years, Vietnamese authors have published 39,408 articles in the ISI index list, 58,426 articles in the Scopus index list. In which, higher education institutions (HEIs) have 22,531 ISI articles (accounting for 57.2% of the national total) and 52,871 Scopus articles (accounting for 90.5% of the whole country). In the past 5 years, Vietnamese ISI articles alone increased 2.1 times (from 5,131 articles in 2016 to 10,850 articles in 2020). Scopus articles of the whole country increased 3.69 times in the past 5 years (from 5,833 articles in 2016 to 21,530 articles in 2020). (Source: Labor Newspaper, August 24, 2021).

Along with the strong growth in the number of international publications of HEIs of the country, in the past 5 years, Hanoi University of Civil Engineering (HUCE) has also had a strong growth in the number of these publications. From 2020, the number of ISI/Scopus publications of the University has reached more than 200 articles.

Figure 1 shows the growth rate of the number of ISI articles in the period 2016-2020 in relation to HEIs of the whole country. It can be seen that from 2018, HUCE has had a rapid increase in the number of publications, which is twice as high as the rate of other HEIs in 2020, and three times the national rate. Particularly, for the number of publications in the Scopus list, this rate is 4 times higher than in 2020 (Figure 2).

In addition to the growth in the number of ISI/Scopus international publications, HUCE has also made a significant progress in the quality of publication, reflected in the growth in the number of scientific citations (citation index). According to Scopus data, which includes most of the citations of ISI/Scopus articles of HUCE, in the period of 2016-2020, the number of ISI/Scopus citations of the University has increased by 3.66 times, and only during the first 9 months of 2021, this number has surpassed the results achieved in 2020 (see Figure 4).

The growth results in quantity and quality of ISI/Scopus international publications of HUCE in recent years are very encouraging. However, this result is only the first step of the process of integrating to international science and technology standards, and it is necessary for the whole University to continue to develop sustainably.
