On the afternoon of June 3, 2026, at the Ha Nam branch of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, a scientific workshop on the topic "Technology for mixing pipes to reuse dredged sludge from rivers in Vietnam" was held in collaboration with Taiyo Kisokogyo Co., Ltd. (Japan). This activity was part of the PRES Project, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), aiming to research, transfer, and apply advanced technological solutions in the treatment and reuse of dredged sludge for sustainable infrastructure development.

The workshop was attended by representatives from state management agencies, international organizations, scientists, experts, and businesses in the fields of construction, environment, and infrastructure from Vietnam and Japan. Representing the international partners were Mr. Miyajima Takahiro – Project Advisor, JICA Office in Vietnam; and Mr. Mutsuga Toshiya – Director of Taiyo Kisokogyo Co., Ltd. Representing the local authorities, Ninh Binh province were Mr. Le Hung Thang – Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, and Mr. Nguyen The Thich – Deputy Director of the Department of Construction . From Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, attendees included Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hoang Giang – Vice Rector, project members, and numerous experts, scientists, and faculty members.
Overview of the Conference
In his opening remarks at the workshop, Professor Nguyen Hoang Giang, Vice Rector of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, emphasized that during the process of infrastructure development, urbanization, and adaptation to climate change, the need for dredging of rivers, canals, and irrigation works is increasing. However, the large volume of dredged sludge generated poses many challenges related to treatment, transportation, disposal, and environmental impact. Therefore, researching technological solutions to reuse this material is not only of scientific significance but also has profound practical and environmental value.
According to Professor Nguyen Hoang Giang, the Japanese pipe mixing technology introduced at the workshop is a promising solution for treating and improving the mechanical properties of dredged sludge, creating a source of embankment material that can be used on-site. This technology significantly reduces the volume of sludge that needs to be transported and disposed of, while also aligning with the trend of circular economy development, efficient resource utilization, and reduced emissions in the construction sector.
Professor Dr. Nguyen Hoang Giang - Vice Rector of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, delivered the opening remarks at the conference.
At the workshop, Vietnamese and Japanese experts presented the results of research, testing, and evaluation of the applicability of dredged sludge reuse technology in the practical conditions of Vietnam. Many discussions focused on technical solutions, economic efficiency, environmental impacts, and necessary mechanisms and policies to promote the widespread application of the technology in the future.
Mr. Miyajima, representative of the JICA Vietnam office, delivered a speech at the workshop.
Experts provided information about the technologies applied in the Project.
Mr. Le Hung Thang, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ninh Binh province, delivered a speech at the workshop.
Mr. Nguyen The Thich - Deputy Director of the Department of Construction of Ninh Binh province, delivered a speech at the workshop.
Preliminary research results show that dredged sludge, after being treated with appropriate technology, can be fully utilized as a material for land reclamation and infrastructure construction. This is considered a new approach to simultaneously address two major problems: treating dredged waste and supplementing construction materials in the context of increasing infrastructure development needs.
Through this workshop, Hanoi University of Civil Engineering continues to affirm its role as a leading institution for training, scientific research, and technology transfer in the fields of construction, infrastructure, and environment. At the same time, the event also opens up opportunities to strengthen cooperation between the University and JICA, Taiyo Kisokogyo Company, and other management agencies, businesses, and research organizations in implementing technological solutions for sustainable development in Vietnam.
Pipe mixing technology for reusing dredged sludge opens up a new approach to waste treatment, utilizing local resources for infrastructure development.
The workshop not only contributes to disseminating applied scientific research results but also creates a forum for connecting scientists, management agencies, and businesses, aiming to effectively exploit resources, protect the environment, and develop the construction industry in a green, modern, and sustainable direction.
The delegates toured the area and took commemorative photos.
