On March 13, 2024, at Hanoi University of Civil Engineering (HUCE), there was the Kick-off Ceremony and Laboratory Opening for SATREPS Project: "Establishing sustainable water supply system resilient to the contamination of drinking water sources". This project is implemented by Hanoi University of Civil Engineering and Nagasaki University, Japan for a period of 5 years (2023 - 2028) with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Agency for Science and Technology Japan (JST).
Overview of the Conference
Attending the Conference, on the Japanese side were Ms. Uno Junko - Representative of JICA Japan; Mr. Shinoda Takanobu - Deputy Chief Representative of JICA Vietnam; Prof. Dr. Takahiro Fujioka - Nagasaki University, Project Manager on the Japanese side and experts - members of the Project.
On the Vietnamese side, there was Mr. Tran Hoai Anh - Deputy Director of the Technical Infrastructure Agency, Ministry of Construction; Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Diep - Chairman of Vietnam Water Supply and Sewerage Association; Associate Professor, PhD. Hoang Tung - Principal of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering; Associate Professor, PhD. Nguyen Hoang Giang – Vice Principal, Project Director; Prof. Dr. Nguyen Viet Anh - Vice President of Vietnam Water Supply and Sewerage Association, Head of Water Supply and Sewerage Department; Associate Professor, PhD. Tran Thi Viet Nga - Head of the Faculty of Environmental Engineering, Project Manager on the Vietnamese side; Dr. Nguyen Tien Dung – Head of International Cooperation Department; Water Supply and Sewerage Companies in Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Hai Duong provinces, Thuy Loi University, ... along with experts and members of the Project.
Speaking at the Conference, Associate Professor, PhD. Hoang Tung - Principal of the School expressed his joy when the SATRPES Project was proposed by Hanoi University of Civil Engineering and Nagasaki University (NU) Japan, with the coordination of important partners of two countries such as: JICA, JST, Ministry of Construction, Water Supply and Sewerage Companies in the provinces, and partner schools.
The SATREPS project “Establishing sustainable water supply system resilient to the contamination of drinking water sources” is a key project funded by the Japanese Government through JST and JICA. The project has great significance in contributing to the protection of water resources and public health, aiming for sustainable economic, social and environmental development of the Nation. At the same time, the Project is also an opportunity for lecturers and researchers at Hanoi University of Civil Engineering to further improve teaching and scientific research in the field of environment and water environment.
Associate Professor, PhD. Hoang Tung - Principal of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering spoke at the Conference
Associate Professor, PhD. Hoang Tung also pledged that the Hanoi University of Civil Engineering would always support and create conditions in term of human resources and necessary facilities for the Project to achieve its set goals. In addition, Associate Professor PhD. Hoang Tung expressed his hope that after successful research, with the support of the Ministry of Construction, VWSA and other companies and partners, this advanced water treatment technology at a reasonable price would come into use.
Mr. Shinoda Takanobu - Deputy Chief Representative of JICA Vietnam spoke at the Conference
Next, Mr. Shinoda Takanobu - Deputy Chief Representative of JICA Vietnam expressed his confidence in the possibility of cooperation between the two sides and his expectations about the important meanings that the project would bring in the future. At the same time, he believed that on the basis of extensive strategic cooperation and mutual trust, the two countries would further promote cooperation in many aspects.
Speaking at the Conference, Mr. Tran Hoai Anh - Deputy Director of the Technical Infrastructure Agency, Ministry of Construction highly appreciated this cooperation project between HUCE and Nagasaki University, Japan. Mr. Tran Hoai Anh said that Vietnam had about 750 clean water plants with a total capacity of 11.2 million m3/day but still couldn’t meet people's needs. Along with that, the process of urbanization has occurred rapidly in recent times and water pollution has led to many consequences. Therefore, the research results will be extremely important to ensure safe water supply for people. Mr. Tran Hoai Anh expressed his wish to successfully implement the Project and that the two Parties would have more effective cooperation projects in the future.
Mr. Tran Hoai Anh - Deputy Director of Technical Infrastructure Agency, Ministry of Construction spoke at the Conference
Introducing an overview of the Project and expected results, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Viet Nga - Project Manager on the Vietnamese side said that currently, water pollution was on the rise and was an alarming problem in Vietnam and around the world, water sources were seriously polluted. With the common goal of developing advanced, cost-effective water treatment technology in Vietnam to ensure access to clean water for drinking and daily life, while water treatment costs for polluted water sources to meet water quality requirements are often very high. Therefore, the Project is built to establish a water treatment system that achieves the goal of safe water supply, reasonable cost and stable operation in developing countries. In addition, the project also develops a water treatment system applying advanced nano filtration technology with low energy and chemical consumption; and an online water quality monitoring system with criteria to sharply reduce costs and always ensure safe water supply.
The project has 5 main components: establishing clogging control techniques for nano filtration membranes, developing submerged membrane components, and monitoring tools to ensure safe water quality, verifying the effectiveness of the submerged nano membrane system and build a foundation for developing the business market for the membrane system.
