The Bridge and Road Engineering program began training in September 1956, making it one of the three earliest programs offered by the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Hanoi University of Technology. The Bridge and Road Engineering group of the Construction Engineering Department (Concrete, Steel, Wood, Bridges and Roads) and the Soil Mechanics Department were established in 1959.

The Faculty of Civil Engineering was one of the six original faculties established at Hanoi University of Civil Engineering in 1966. The first head of the faculty was Professor Dang Huu, who was the first person from the faculty to be awarded the title of Professor by the State in 1980 and was awarded the title of Academician by the Russian Federation Academy of Transport Sciences in 1993.

The Faculty of Civil Engineering offers training in the following fields/specializations:

  • The Civil Engineering and Transportation Engineering ngành - specializing in Bridge and Road Construction, comprises two fields:

- Bridges and underground structures;

- Highways and Urban Roads

  • Surveying and Mapping Engineering (specialization in Construction Surveying and Land Administration)

The levels and systems of training include: undergraduate level (full-time, part-time); postgraduate level (Master's and Doctoral programs).

Civil Engineering - Transportation Engineering - Bridge and Road Construction Specialization

- Training program:

  • Duration of study: 4.5 to 5 years, credit-based system. The first two years will be dedicated to general and foundational courses. In the third year, students will study general subjects related to Civil Engineering and Transportation Construction. In the remaining years, students will study specialized subjects in Bridge and Tunnel Engineering and complete a graduation project.
  • To facilitate students' opportunities to study and work abroad or for foreign companies in Vietnam, starting from the 2012-2013 academic year (Cohort 57), the Department of Civil Engineering has offered a Civil Engineering Development (CDE) program taught in English. The CDE class has approximately 50-60 students selected from those admitted to the Civil Engineering department with high scores. The training program for the CDE class is similar to regular classes; however, in the first two years, students receive intensive English language training, and in the remaining years, specialized subjects are taught entirely in English.

- Degree:

  • Upon graduation, students are awarded a degree in "Civil Engineering for Transportation Infrastructure".

- Career opportunities:

  • Job opportunities are excellent as students can apply for jobs in many different construction fields such as: House construction, Road and Railway construction, Ports and waterways, etc.
  • There are opportunities to pursue master's and doctoral degrees in Bridge and Tunnel Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Construction Management, both domestically and internationally.
  • Over 90% of students find employment in their field six months after graduation.
  • Many former students of the Civil Engineering program have completed or are currently pursuing doctoral dissertations in the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. Many now hold important positions in the transportation and construction industries, as well as working as staff at research institutes and other universities.
  • After graduation, many students majoring in Civil Engineering and Transportation Engineering have become prominent scientists in Vietnam, such as: Professor Dr. Nguyen Nhu Khai, former Rector of the University of Construction; Professor Dr. Nguyen Tram, former Head of the Postgraduate Training Faculty of the University of Construction; Nguyen Van Doc, Secretary of Quang Ninh Province; Nguyen Ngoc Hoi, Vice Chairman of Thanh Hoa Province. Civil Engineering - Transportation Engineering - Specialization in Highway and Urban Road Construction

- Introduce:

  • The specialization in Highway and Urban Road Construction is one of the two main specializations of the Faculty of Bridge and Road Engineering. It is one of the oldest and most traditional specializations at the University of Construction. Hanoi University of Civil Engineering has over 60 years of experience in training civil engineers specializing in bridge and road construction (since 1956). Throughout its development, the program has trained a large number of engineers and professionals working in the construction sector in general and the transportation industry in particular.

- Faculty team:

  • The Department of Road and Urban Engineering is the unit responsible for the specialized field and directly teaches in-depth specialized subjects within the field. The department is also one of the earliest established units at Hanoi University of Civil Engineering (formerly the Road Engineering Group – Hanoi University of Technology, established in 1956, before Hanoi University of Civil Engineering was founded in 1966, based on a separation from Hanoi University of Technology).
  • Over more than 60 years of construction and development, generations of faculty and staff of the Department have made significant contributions not only to the training of generations of bridge and road engineers but also to the development of the transportation sector in general. Faculty members have published hundreds of publications, books, newspapers, and technical documents, serving as useful professional reference materials for engineers and managers in the field of road transport. Current faculty members are also leading experts in the planning, design, construction, and management of transportation projects; they have made significant contributions to many practical projects nationwide. With these immense contributions over generations, the Department has been honored with numerous prestigious awards from the Party and State, including the title of Hero of Labor during the đổi mới (renovation) period.
  • The Department's teaching staff currently comprises 18 lecturers, including 3 Professors, 4 Associate Professors, and 5 PhD holders. Most of the Department's lecturers have received training and further education abroad. The faculty members are all highly competent professionals with strong ethical values, who are always innovative and creative, and who deserve to be considered "role models in learning and training" for students to emulate.

- Career prospects:

  • Working in management positions in state management agencies for investment and construction in general, and in the transportation sector in particular, from the central to local levels, such as: the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Construction, the Ministry of Planning and Investment…; Departments of Transport, Departments of Construction, Departments of Architecture and Planning, Departments of Planning and Investment...; construction project management boards; traffic management and operation centers; construction management departments, land management departments of districts and counties.
  • Working in management positions within businesses operating in the construction sector in general, and transportation infrastructure construction in particular.

Surveying and Mapping Engineering - Specialization in Construction Surveying and Land Administration

- Job opportunities:

  • Career opportunities for engineers specializing in Construction Surveying and Geodesy are vast. Specifically, they can work in companies involved in surveying, consulting, and construction of civil and industrial projects, bridges and roads, irrigation and hydropower; work in land administration at the commune, district, and provincial levels; work at the Department of Construction, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, and the Department of Transport; work at research institutes such as the Institute of Construction Science and Technology, the Institute of Surveying and Mapping Science; and teach surveying courses at universities, colleges, and vocational schools.

- Opportunities for second degree and postgraduate training in Vietnam and abroad: Engineers specializing in Surveying and Geodesy Engineering from Hanoi University of Civil Engineering have the opportunity to pursue a second degree, dual degree, and advanced training through the following programs:

  • University training for a second degree, dual degree: Because they have already studied many subjects in the field of construction engineering, students in Surveying and Land Management only need to study a few additional subjects from other fields such as civil engineering, bridge and road construction, etc., to be awarded a degree in that field.

- Civil Engineering - Transportation Engineering - Specialization in Bridges and Underground Structures

  • Students majoring in Bridge and Tunnel Engineering are equipped with comprehensive knowledge of mechanics and skills in calculating and analyzing structures subjected to dynamic and static loads, serving the design and construction of bridge and tunnel projects such as: Nhat Tan Bridge, Bai Chay Bridge, Can Tho Bridge, Gianh River Bridge, Thanh Tri Bridge, urban bridge systems, Hai Van Tunnel, Deo Ca Tunnel, etc.
  • With the knowledge and skills honed during their studies, students majoring in Bridge and Tunnel Engineering can work not only in the bridge and tunnel industry but also in the construction sector in general, and specifically in civil and industrial construction, and port and waterway construction.

- Civil Engineering - Transportation Engineering - Specialization in Highway and Urban Road Construction

  • The training program for Civil Engineering graduates specializing in road and urban construction aims to produce graduates with strong ethical qualities; solid scientific knowledge in the field of managing and constructing transportation infrastructure projects; professional skills, practical abilities, and necessary personal qualities; the capacity to handle situations, solve professional problems, and conduct scientific research independently and creatively; the ability to acquire, process, and communicate information; and the necessary social communication skills to work effectively in multidisciplinary and international environments; as well as the ability to apply information technology and foreign languages in their professional activities.

- Surveying and Mapping Engineering and Construction Surveying - Land Administration

  • The university offers a 5-year undergraduate program in Surveying and Mapping Engineering, specializing in Construction Surveying and Land Management. The strength of the University of Construction's engineering training in Construction Surveying and Land Management lies in its emphasis on engineering surveying, surveying technology (GPS, electronic total stations, etc.), and information technology in surveying (Geographic Information Systems, databases, etc.). In addition, students also study many construction-related subjects such as material strength, structural mechanics, reinforced concrete, foundations, road design, and bridge design.
  • Upon graduation, engineers specializing in Construction Surveying and Geodesy are capable of designing, constructing, supervising, and managing projects related to surveying and geodesy, as well as surveying in construction projects such as engineering surveying and monitoring of structural displacement. They possess skills in surveying, processing geodetic data, programming geodetic problems, and effectively solving arising situations and problems; they also have strong teamwork and independent work skills. Compared to engineers from other universities training in surveying, Construction Surveying and Geodesy engineers from the University of Construction are particularly strong in the field of construction engineering and can perform equivalent tasks to civil engineering and transportation engineering.
  • During their studies, in addition to scholarships from the University, students majoring in Construction Surveying and Land Management may also receive scholarships from foreign organizations and domestic organizations and companies.
  • The first person to receive the title of Emulation Fighter was teacher Nguyen Van Tuyen (in 1960).
  • The first PhD graduates from the Department of Bridge and Road Engineering were Professors Dang Huu, Le Van Thuong, etc. (in 1966).
  • The first posthumous award of the title of Hero of the Armed Forces was given to martyr Bui Ngoc Duong, a student of the 7th cohort of the Faculty of Bridge and Road Engineering (1968).
  • The first PhDs to defend their dissertations domestically were professors such as: Duong Hoc Hai, Nguyen Nhu Khai, Vu Cong Ngu… (in 1978)
  • The first associate professors to be recognized were: Ha Huy Cuong, Hoang Van Tan, Nguyen Tram, and Nguyen Van Tuyen (in 1980).
  • The first Hero of Labor title awarded by the State was to the Department of Highways and Urban Roads (in 1985).
  • Since its establishment, the Faculty of Bridge and Road Engineering has had 250 staff members, including 18 Professors, 30 Associate Professors, and 75 Doctors. Throughout its development, the Faculty of Bridge and Road Engineering has received numerous titles, medals, and other awards.

During the 2014-2015 academic year, the entire faculty had 15 university-level research projects and 8 ministerial-level projects. The number of student research projects directly supervised by faculty members and successfully completed was 22.
